2016 is shaping up to be an amazing year for gamers, with several major releases confirmed and several others to be revealed during the course of the year. The games in this list have been picked simply for their awesomeness and nothing else! Some of these will be released cross platform, while others are restricted to just one or two. Nonetheless, all of these games have been eagerly awaited (some for years) and now we can barely contain our excitement now that they’re finally here!
10 Amazing 2016 Video Games to be released…
1. Doom
This is the much awaited reboot of the classic FPS Doom series that was all the rage in the nineties and 2000s. Doom is back, and in the words of Id Software, it’s centered around “badass demons, big f******g guns and moving really fast”. They seem to know what the fans have always loved about the franchise and are sticking to the essentials. There is no reloading or hiding to recuperate health. Instead, you get unlimited weapon choices, and pick up ammo and health packs as you go along.
There’s tons of blood and gore to be had from the gameplay which features modes like Team Deathmatch, Clan Arena, Freeze Tag, and Domination, among others. The game story is set on Mars with Demons attacking the base and the experience of gaming harks back to the originals. This is looking like the best iteration of the Doom series yet!
Release Date : May 13 (2016 Video Games)
Platforms : PS4, Xbox One, Windows
2. Deus Ex : Mankind Divided
The new Deus Ex game seems to have lost none of the coolness and retains all the great features you’d expect from the franchise. It’s set in 2029 in a free roam open world environment where player decisions shape the gameplay. So much so that different players will experience different game endings based on what they do. This might not be a great thing considering what happened with Mass Effect 3, but it might just be the thing we’re ready for and would make for interesting results.
Currently, the game is listed as a single player, with no options of multiplayer. The player can choose the mode in which to approach missions – the classic Deus X stealth option or the full combat kill-everyone-in-sight variant. Both promise to be equally fun. The Dystopian cyberpunk backdrop coupled with the smooth and interactive gameplay is what makes this one of the most awaited franchise updates this year!
Release Date : August 23 (2016 Video Games)
Platforms : PS4, Xbox One, Windows
3. Mirror’s Edge Catalyst
This is a different flavour of fighting + exploration games where you have an engaging storyline, free world access and plenty of conflict – but no guns. Seriously, there are no weapons whatsoever in this entire game. The idea is centered around exploring the beautiful city of Glass and uncovering its dark secrets.
What you get to do in this game is run freely and beat up the bad guys with special combat moves. The whole thing looks spectacular and feels great (at least from the trailer) and it looks like they have correctly captured the essence of what made the first Mirror’s Edge game captivating. There are competing factions in the city and the evil corporations as always are the bad guys. The details are a little sketchy right now, but this could very well be a blockbuster off the beaten path.
Release Date : May 24 (2016 Video Games)
Platforms : PS4, Xbox One, Windows
4. Total War : Warhammer
The descriptions of this game read like the Lord of the Rings trilogy met the Underworld franchise and created a medieval battleground where everyone is out for blood. You get to lead undead armies as a Vampire count (oh yeah!) and there is carnage all over the place so there is no moral squeamishness involved at all. Total War promises just what it says in the title.
The factions keep making, unmaking and remaking alliances in an effort to conquer the whole game world, which is pretty awesome considering the number of zombies each fight generates. There is death magic, necromancy, and a rideable zombie dragon as well! This game is making promises of epic proportions and we can only hope it will deliver them in style.
Release Date : May 24 (2016 Video Games)
Platforms : Windows, Linux, Mac OS
5. No Man’s Sky
This is the ultimate in fantasy game genres with an infinite gameworld which the player can explore at whatever pace they want. There is danger and opportunity at every corner and the beauty of the entire thing is quite mesmerizing. The game promises 18 quintillion (18 zeros) procedurally generated worlds and the ultimate objective is to explore your way to the center of the universe.
The game seems to be built around one objective only – lose yourself. The game universe is beautifully crafted and every action has a consequence (whether intentional or otherwise). The game promises eternal bliss and the gameplay seems to be full of excitement and thrills. Definitely a game to watch out for this year.
Release Date : 21 June (2016 Video Games)
Platforms : PS4, Windows
6. Lego Star Wars The Force Awakens
In the world of serious gaming, Lego games cut the atmosphere with games aimed at kids and humour which will have you rolling on the floor (much like the Lego movie). This new iteration is deeply steeped in the Star Wars fandom with painstaking attention to detail and well sketched characters with limitations on their powers.
The game offers the hardcore fans a chance to learn a lot more about the Star Wars lore, including character background, overall backstory and just plain cool stuff. If you’re simply into Lego and just want to play with them, this game offers you ample opportunity to do that as well, with options to build stuff with new materials you find in the game. This is a great game for kids and adults alike and it sure has a great sense of humour.
Release Date : 28 June (2016 Video Games)
Platforms : PS3, PS4, Xbox One, Wii U, Xbox 360, PS Vita, Nintendo 3DS, Windows
7. Final Fantasy XV
The game is set in a world where complex political maneuverings lead to a global conflict. The hero embarks on an epic quest to retrieve a stolen crystal to save the world from collapse. There are not many more fantasy genre boxes you can tick before having people drooling all over the place.
The world map is massive with free roam options via car, airship (epic!) or the chocobo. The Final Fantasy series has been a defining game within the fantasy genre and this latest of the game promises to be everything that we have all hoped for and probably a bit more!
Release Date : 30 September (2016 Video Games)
Platforms : PS4, Xbox One
8. For Honor
This is the perfect game for the history geeks and nerds out there. The game is set in medieval times. You get to experience brilliant hand to hand combat through one of of three factions you can choose – The Chosen (Samurai), The Legion (Knights) or the Warborn (Vikings). This game just got cooler by a factor of 10.
The entire game is built around fighting and technique, with badass weapons that you can choose from and skills that can be learned and upgraded. The game has multiplayer mode as well. You even have “friendly fire” setting where you can injure a teammate if you hit them in the confusion of the fight. The designers even say the game is designed to let you feel the weight of the weapon you wield. This game looks incredibly promising and could become the default melee game option for 2016!
Release Date : 2016, To be announced (2016 Video Games)
Platforms : PS4, Xbox One, Windows
9. Tekken 7
The announcement for Tekken 7 caused a sensation at the Paris Games week. This is expected to be the last game in the Tekken series, releasing 20 years after the original one. The game is going to be using the Unreal 4 engine and the graphics are already looking awesome!
The team has also announced that there will be new fighters available in this one who will fight alongside the classic Tekken fighters. Further details are quite sketchy and the team is very cagey about the features to be released. One thing is for sure, the last of the Tekken series will be an awesome game to play!
Release Date : 2016, To be Announced (2016 Video Games)
Platforms : PS4, Xbox One, Windows
10. Vector
This is an artistic, futuristic dystopian game (like almost everything these days) which is making waves all over the place. Vector is a free form parkour player where the entire objective is running in a straight line and scaling difficult obstacles. This might not sound exciting, but the form and shapes of the figures are beautifully rendered.
The idea is to complete every level before you are caught by your pursuer and you get rewarded for as much style you can bring to your freestyle parkour. Timing is everything and the right button pressed a millisecond late will cost you the game. The game will keep you engaged with its dynamic pumped up soundtrack and simple yet stylized graphics. The game is short but definitely the type you would want to keep coming back to.
Release Date : 2016, To be Announced (2016 Video Games)
