The Mitre Tavern was the first pub in Melbourne. That kind of nostalgia has gotta be worth some massive points. This is a busy weeknight haunt of CBD professionals to unwind with a drink after a day of work. The pub section is incredibly noisy and busy, but thankfully the upstairs restaurant is magically insulated to the point that only the occasional strains of high-pitched laughter are able to float through the window.

The decor is tasteful and classy, and obviously tailored towards businessmen. The service is friendly. And the menu is such that you’ll take longer than usual to decide what to eat. But who doesn’t like to be spoilt for choice every once in awhile. On top of that, it doesn’t help that the wine list is very extensive, which can be quite expensive sometimes, but that is how a wine collection is supposed to be, isn’t it. The menu has, of course, a very large selection of steaks. You can always go for the 200g Gippsland Fresh 5 Star Fillet, which is simply exquisite. Overall the steaks are deemed excellent cut; tender, juicy and full of flavour. Apart from that, few sides of crunchy steak fries with truffle salt and sauteed button mushrooms. But wait, they also feature typical pub fare such as pasta and chicken parmigiana with a sophisticated twist (with a price point that matches). The fish is delicate and tender, with perfect crispiness. Their blood pudding, delicious as expected. And the green beans cooked just enough to be crunchy yet fresh. What will really surprise you is how juicy and satisfying the meat is cooked, close to perfection. So much food will surely complete satisfying meal and leave you wanting for more and more.
