A small, unassuming entrance with a minimally marked glass entrance sits on Clarendon St in South Melbourne, Hercules Morse is a small restaurant plus bar with a wicked snacking/sharing menu and drinks to boot. The staff are enthusiastic about what they serve and are keen to receive feedback about how each dish can improve. It was very endearing, and nice to hear the excitement of new menu plans. Hercules Morse is a modern Australian restaurant that everyone in South Melbourne is talking about. Despite its unassuming face, HM has a beautiful fit out. Clean lines of wood and painted steel with lightbulbs all combine to provide a trendy but warm ambience. There are wooden slats for bar tables against the side of the wall facing the open kitchen as well.

The menu is designed for sharing, tapas style modern British food which all sounded delicious. To start off we got the Bacorn, which are strips of fried sweet corn, dusted in a smoky bacon salt. Yumm! They looked very impressive and were delicious. Not as bacony as expected but definitely a good start to the night. Another one of their crowd pleaser is their famous cauliflower & cheese balls with lemon-rosemary salt served with a dijon dipping mayo. The open kitchen keeps dishing up little plates of these all day long, and after you order one for yourself, you’ll understand why. They were amazing!

There is quite a variety in terms of drinks at Hercules Morse and there are two pages of cocktails available as well! They are interestingly named. For example, the XXX Expresso which provides a caffeine hit as well as drinks like Fields of Lavender and Goodie Goodie Gum Drop.

Hercules Morse is relaxed and intimate restaurant/bar that is great for many occasions – from date night to a casual catch-up with friends. The wait staff are friendly and very helpful in assisting you in dishes and are really knowledgeable about each dish on the menu. It has a great menu which covers a variety of dishes and a fantastic drink menu to match – all in the funky suburb of South Melbourne.
