Coda is an amazing restaurant tucked beneath the hustle and bustle of the city. In a basement off Flinders lane, this hidden gem has a sensational menu and provides a memorable eating experience. When you think of cool Modern Australian restaurants in Melbourne’s CBD the image that comes to mind first has to be a long and angry queue of people waiting outside. And for someone who is mad about modern Australian, it’s grossly unfair. Thankfully though there is one particular little modern Australian spot that has seen a gap in the Flinders Lane market and one can only guess they’re cashing in – THEY TAKE BOOKINGS. Unheard of. The food is inventive, inspiring and undeniably delicious. The venue was dimly lit and had an intimate feel and a great wine selection. The service was great, the staff were friendly and attentive.
Their spanner crab is cold and fresh. Having a galangal, roasted chilli, lime and fresh tomato. A perfect starter to the meal. You fold up the lime betel leaf and eat it like a little taco. The flavours are light and refreshing. Moving on, their Hervey bay scallop is equally mind-boggling. It is seared perfectly and the pearl tapioca is perfectly buttered up and creamy, giving it a brilliant texture. It is generously topped with Yarra Valley salmon caviar. The caviar pops in your mouth with bursts of saltiness and it makes the whole experience exciting and absolutely divine. Having such a great meal and not ending it with an equally divine dessert is sheer injustice. And nothing will help you avoiding this than their heavenly toasted meringue, which looks beautiful as always. It is beautifully covered in white snowy dust. There are also big soft peaks of toasted meringue, having a toasted outer, which simply melts in your mouth. To put it simply, they literally tasted like camp-fire roasted marshmallows, yum! There were also little crunchy meringues, fluffy vanilla sponge, coconut cream, pineapple and yuzu which adds a real unique citrusy kick to cut through all the sweet. Heavenly!
