The Golden Age of comics has suddenly made a return on the big screen. With the exploding fame of the Dark Knight trilogy, the Avengers and the rebooted X-Men series, comics have made a grand return and they have only just begun to scratch the surface.
2016 is a great year for superhero fans. Here are the movies planned for a 2016 release:
SuperVillain, SuperHero Movies of 2016
1. Deadpool
Released: 12th February (Warning: NSFW)
Marvel finally releases the R rated movie the world has been waiting for! DEADPOOL! The irritating, super-healing, ultra cool, skilled swordsman anti hero finally gets his own movie! Following Wade Wilson’s origin story, Deadpool shows how this ex-Special-Forces-now-mercenary’s life turns upside down when the evil scientist Ajax disfigures, tortures and turns him into the merc-with-a-mouth. Reviews claim that the movie stays true to the essence of the comics and is full of dark comedy and the raw humor that the comic books are loved for.
But you’d already know it…Because you would already have seen the movie a few million times…Right?
……. Right?
2. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
This movie has got the entire world psyched! Batman AND Superman in ONE movie?! WITH the Wonder Woman, Aquaman and the Flash?! Can it get any better? (Yeah, Aquaman is also in the movie.)
This Warner Brothers production has the world’s best strategist getting stone age on the son of Krypton. Jesse Eisenberg makes an appearance as the evil, bald-headed businessman – Lex Luthor. Henry Cavill reprises his role as Superman. Ben Affleck dons Batman’s cloak and he looks ab-so-lutely awesome. Comic book fans are going gaga over the authenticity of the suits.
Dawn of Justice will be a sequel to Man Of Steel and will focus on the aftermath of the struggle between the Kyptonians which left mass destruction in its wake. The movie hits the theaters on 29th March 2016.
3. Captain America: Civil War
“He is my friend.”
“So was I.”
Never have two lines from a trailer left anyone this distraught. No one wants Cap to fight this seriously with Iron Man. The list does not end there, though. The Civil War comic series is fairly serious, therefore Civil War will most probably be Marvel’s first no-nonsense movie as well.
Dealing with the consequences of the battle in Avengers, people are growing fearful of the superheroes’ unchecked power. A new “Riot Act” is in the making, which would require the superheroes to register and be answerable to the people.
Tony Stark is in support of this idea.
Captain America isn’t.
This results in the “Civil War” between superheroes. Good news for Marvel fans: Spiderman will make an appearance in the movie. Our friendly neighbourhood spiderman played a pivotal role in the comics and he is going to play one in the movie as well.
Whose side are you on?
Witness the final outcome on 25th April 2016.
4. X-Men: Apocalypse
The X-Men are back! With another world threatening situation at their hands. Or should I say, it is…Apocalyptic?
Worshiped as a God since the dawn of civilisation, the immortal and most powerful of all the mutants – Apocalypse – sets out to rid the world of humans and create a new world order using his Four Horsemen (Magneto, Angel, Psylocke and Storm). This Fox production, with an ensemble cast consisting of Oscar Isaac, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence and Sophie Turner, will be set in 1983 and aims to wrap up the trilogy that started with X-Men: First Class.
Catch the end of the world on 26th May 2016.
5. Suicide Squad
What happens when you turn a team of death-row supervillains into deniable us government assets which undertake high-risk, black-ops mission? You get the Suicide Squad.
The movie serves as an origin story for the antihero strike team. Deadshot, Harley Quinn, Enchantress, Killer Croc and Boomerang consist of this not-so-elite strike team. Jared Leto looks absolutely terrifying and amazing as the Joker. Batman is supposed to make an appearance in the film. Suicide Squad will be the third movie in the DC Extended Universe and is going to hit the theaters in 5th August 2016.
6. Doctor Strange
Marvel brings the year to a close with another origin story. Benedict Cumberbatch steps into the shoes of Doctor Strange, our own Sorcerer Supreme.
Stephen Vincent Strange is the world’s top neurosurgeon. He is highly self centered, arrogant and egotistical. Losing his hands (they start shaking uncontrollably) in a car accident, he searches high and low for a cure. The Ancient One cures his hands and takes him as his apprentice. Stephen Strange turns Doctor Strange and with his terrifying power takes on magical powers and demons threatening the Earth.
Watch Marvel’s mystical side unfold on 4th November 2016.
7. Gambit
Expanding its cinematic universe, Marvel gives out one more origin story this year.
Gambit! Voted #4 as the sexiest comic book character of all time by IGN. With his charm, swagger and dark past, Gambit is one of the most interesting characters in the X-Men comics.
Not much is known about this movie except that Channing Tatum (Yay!) is starring as Gambit. The plot is unknown as of yet, but it will, most probably, be an origin story. The movie is slated to release for an October release, but considering how filming had not begun as of January 2016, it might be shifted for a 2017 release… But, well, fingers crossed.
With DC and Marvel both rapidly expanding their cinematic universes, the following years are going to be even crazier for fans.Which movie are you waiting for the most?
